A night at The Beaufort Bar, The Savoy Hotel
If I had to pick one bar in London for a special occasion, it would be The Beaufort Bar at The Savoy. It oozes old school glamour, transporting you back in time the moment you enter the room. There's a piano in the corner being played beautifully, a real mix of clientele - from hotel guests just flown in from the States to couples on a fancy date - and the right kind of mood-lighting that instantly sets the tone and relaxes you. Being neither hotel guests (one can dream) or on a date (again, one can dream), Julia and I perched ourselves on the best seats in the room - at the bar - and settled in for the night.
The bar has recently launched its new cocktail menu, inspired by the stories of The Savoy which make the hotel what it is today: a journey of anecdotes that connect the past to the present to the future. Each drink on the brand new menu has been inspired by a story, a guest, or an event which has taken place in the building since its opening in 1889. Having fallen in love with their previous menu (the most magical pop-up book), I had high expectations for this menu and it didn't let me down. A beautifully illustrated tunnel book, the menu is made up of twenty cocktails, each one with its own unique story to tell, from rooftop tap-dancing with Fred Astaire to extravagant gondola parties held by American millionaires.
I won't spill the beans on every cocktail we had because I really think you should try them out for yourself but I'll give you a story behind just the one. 'Read All About It' refers to the secret bar located in the depths of the hotel known as Tich's Bar, run by an old gentleman called Arthur "Tich" Massara. During WWII, the bar developed into an all night club for American press whilst they reported on the war from The Savoy. Rumour has it that Tich's Bar drank the war out of whisky...
And there's plenty more where that came from - just pay the bar a visit for yourselves! I strongly recommend you order the Seal of Approval (my absolute favourite drink of the night) and The Showgirl (scroll down to see why!). Make sure you sit at the bar and let Bar Manager Kyle and his team talk you through the stories - it's all part of what makes a trip to the Beaufort Bar a magical experience!
