The Zetter Hotel, Clerkenwell

Sometimes you want to get out of London but leave if too last minute to actually plan anything. We all do it. So may I make an alternative suggestion?

Plan a last minute staycation.

Because whilst you might think you've done London ten times over, I guarantee a night's stay in a hotel will make you feel like a tourist in your own city and put a bit of excitement back into living here. That being said, over the last Bank Holiday weekend, I had a little staycation of my own planned.

Clerkenwell is an area of London that I really don't spend much time in: I have no reason to visit and it's not an area that is easy for me to reach. So when I was invited to stay at The Zetter Hotel (from the group that also owns The Zetter Townhouses and Grain Store), I thought it would be the perfect excuse to feel like a tourist in Clerkenwell for a change.

And so, after a Sunday filled with wandering, Rebecca and I checked in to the hotel round mid-afternoon, having been greeted by the lovely reception staff. We were shown to our room on the top floor, staying in the beautiful Rooftop Deluxe Room; a modern, spacious, design-led room with quirky touches like East London Liquor Company booze, a Marshall radio, REN bathroom products, complimentary chocolate truffles and a very well-stocked mini-bar filled with indie brands. But the best part of all was the roof terrace, offering views over a very peaceful London (it was a Sunday after all).

Resisting the urge to get into our fluffy robes and call it a day, we dragged ourselves out the room and went for a spot of exploration around the area before it was time to head back, freshen up and make our way to dinner.

Thankfully we didn't have to go far for dinner which was served in the hotel's bar & restaurant, Club Zetter. Food was absolutely delicious and just the kind of hearty meal we needed after a long day on our feet. Starters included heavenly Emmental Croquettes, Padron Peppers and a beautiful Beetroot Salad whilst for mains we opted for a Jerusalem Artichoke Risotto with toasted hazlenut and truffle and Roast Cornish Cod with seaweed crushed potatoes, creamed mussels and sea herbs. We saved just enough room to share the dessert - an indulgent Chocolate Mousse - before claiming defeat, retreating to our room and falling fast asleep.

The next morning we divulged our inner-gluttony and ordered breakfast in bed. You'd have thought we'd filled up enough last night but no, no, there's always room the next day! We nibbled away whilst enjoying the views over London before doing the inevitable - checking out and returning to being regular old Londoners.

The perfect end to a lovely staycation, thank you The Zetter Hotel!
